I approached this latest piece slightly different than I normally do and took some snap shots along the way. As you can see, I often lay down a field of color to act as an underpainting and help create and atmosphere as well as a tonality to the overall piece. It also helps to build up the subtle shades of the face when you have this darker color to start with. I then transfer my sketch down and begin laying in blocks of color gradually until I feel I’ve reached a good base. Next I start to noodle the details of the face adding in more darks and blacks, as well as highlights. Finally, I block in a background and I add in subtle flecks, specks, and pencil lines, and details to bring the whole piece together.

Here’s a new Nick Cave sketch for Caricaturama 3000. I’m glad they chose him for this week’s challenge since I really didn’t like the last Nick Cave piece I did and this gave me an excuse to re-visit.

I’ve been taking part for the last few weeks in a facebook caricature contest called Caricaturama 3000, the contest is open to anyone, or anyone that is an artist or budding artist. Every week a different celebrity of some sort is picked by the previous week’s winner. This week is Tommy Lee Jones, it’s always great to see all the different submissions from around the world. Here’s a new finished piece of Mick. I’m having a little more fun and trying to introduce some of my older style back into my newer work. See the final piece here»
